Falantine

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I spent my Falantine evening.

I know I’ve abandoned you all, but walahi I’ve just gotten really bored of writing. Ma’lesh.

But today deserves a post.

So I’m driving home on one of Egypt’s highways at 10pm, when suddenly my car sputters, and dies.  read more »

Thought

Came home from work today to find out that my mom had decided to buy all new Fendi furniture.

Did you even know Fendi made furniture? The kind of furniture you should be afraid to breathe near?

I don’t understand sometimes why I’m not like the rest of my family. I think I’m splurging when I buy Tom & Jerry underwear from TopShop.

I hate it when I drink coffee and eat or drink nothing else all day. Then my pee stinks of coffee.

Oh, and Happy Christmas/ new year/ Coptic Christmas :)  read more »

A Look Back At Digital Journalism

Hindsight bias is the devil. And although there are a couple of different generations that are regular users of the Internet, but at the same time old enough to remember the days before it even existed, no one could possible recall this, back in 1981:  read more »

Cloud Computing With eyeOS

The move towards online storage and web applications has been going on for a while. Soon enough, users will enjoy the ability to combine all of the documents and applications in central places so that they can be easily accessed from any computer via the internet. With the advancement of services and online applications available for free, plus the high-connection speeds available everywhere, it’s only logical to rely less on the local machines, and to take the tasks and documents on the move.  read more »

The Fight Against Spam

It’s a sad but true story that as we witness technological developments, spammers become advance and reach new levels to infiltrate our mail boxes. It is by far one of the most frustrating aspects of the online experience, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it will be ending anytime soon.

Spamming started back in 1978 on the network of the time, ARPANET, when an email was sent to 600 address. But it started operating on a massive level in 1994, right around when millions of users were signing up for new email accounts and getting introduced to using the Internet. Today it is estimated that there are more than 100 billion spam messages every single day.  read more »

Can GIMP Replace Photoshop?

As a web designer and a Linux supporter, I’m always left to ponder if I could really break off from Windows and Mac OS completely, and live exclusively with the penguin. Almost all applications that we work with today are free and/or open-source, with the huge majority making themselves at home on Ubuntu and the likes. However, there are a group of specialized programs used by web designers that cannot be used (directly) on Linux. Most notably, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. By far one of the most popular image-manipulation programs out there, even amongst non-designers and non-photographers, is Photoshop.  read more »

Africa And The Internet

No one expects the Black Continent to be competing with the Japanese as far as internet usage is concerned, but few people know the seriousness and sadness of the situation. With the exponential growth of the Internet and the Web 2.0 services, the gap between many African nations and the rest of the world is becoming too big to handle.

According to the Internet World Stats, less than 6% of Africans are connected to the internet. Compare that with almost 27% of the rest of the world, and you will have an idea of the technology gap distancing the two. The sad part, in fact, is that there are a number of countries that have decent percentages, meaning this number is not an accurate representative:  read more »
