The International Religious Freedom Report Part 5: The Muslim Brotherhood

As the public attack on the State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report started the Muslim Brotherhood could not waste this chance to join.

In an interview on the 20th of September 2007 with the Muslim Brotherhood’s English website, Dr. Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Executive Office rejected the content of this report.

He said that America should rather condemn itself first before it attacks other countries and that we reject any intervention from the US administration for a blackmail.

The International Religious Freedom Report Part 4: The Public Debate

Some objective media reports were done after the State Department issued its International Religious Freedom Report.

Sameh Fawzy a writer in Watany commented on the report saying that in September every year the State Department issues its Religious Freedom Report and usually this report is met with 3 reactions; a complete attack, official ignoring and the government media highlighting the lines that say that Egypt is progressing.

This year there was an official condemnation from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a campaign in the government media attacking the report.

The International Religious Freedom Report Part 3: The Coptic Church

After the State Department issued its International Religious Freedom Report, the Coptic Church issued some statements and its leaders had some interviews to attack the report.

This was started in El Masry El Youm article on the 17th of September. In this article El Masry El Youm interviewed 2 Coptic Priests; Father Salib Matta Sawirous and Father Morcos Aziz, Mr. Gamal Assaad and Mr. Rouf Hindy a leader of the Baha’is in Egypt.

The International Religious Freedom Report Part 2: The Government Reaction

As soon as the State Department issued its International Religious Freedom Report a public outcry took place in Egypt. The Egyptian Foreign ministry was first to condemn this report and soon after Egyptian newspapers were flooded with articles attacking the report. The number of these articles and the high level journalists it attracted suggests an organized government campaign to slander the report and stop any real public debate regarding its contents.

The International Religious Freedom Report Part 1: The Report Content

The State Department has issued on the 14th of March 2007 the new International Religious Freedom Report for 2007.

This year’s report is a great improvement from the previous ones in terms of its content. Previous reports were subject to numerous mistakes such as the 2005 Report, which said that Al Ahram newspaper was a privately funded newspaper with some governmental oversight.
