How do we view art? Are we conditioned to appreciate certain things and not others?

For instance, when looking at a Picasso, are we admiring the art or the reputation of the artist? Do we even understand what we're looking at all the time or are we just trained to be in awe of the pieces that have shocked and amazed generations before us without knowing why?

Have you met someone who said he or she hated the Mona Lisa? or didn't appreciate the mystery of The Last Supper?

What makes art good or bad?

Ode to Egypt president lands clerk in jail
July 14, 2009

CAIRO (AFP) — An Egyptian civil servant who wrote a satirical poem about veteran President Hosni Mubarak has been jailed for three years after a colleague turned the villainous verses over to the authorities.

Wednesday Recommendation: Unleash Your Art Rage!

A very belated Wed. recommendation, but you'll have to excuse me this week, my sleeping habits are getting hugely distorted.

Today's recommendation is a sketching/paint/design/art program, Art Rage, that's one of my personal favorites for its uniqueness and special features that you don't really get anywhere else. It's fun, extremely easy to use, won't get you lost in options like with photoshop (for inexperienced users) and simply gets the job done!

You just have to try it out.

Wednesday Recommendation: Face Transformer

Ever wondered what you'd look like in 40 years? How you'd look like if you were born in another continent? Would you recognize your face if it was in an artwork by Botticelli or Mucha or in a Manga cartoon?

The Face Transformer, a program developed by the computer science department at the University of St Andrews of Scotland allows you to have all that.

You upload an image of your face, locate where the head is, locate the position of the eyes and mouth then choose a transform to see it in different scenarios (changing the age, race or gender for example).. Or even see how you'd look like if you were an ape!

These are examples of transforms I've done to two of my pictures.

Thurs AA : Michelangelo. No, Not the Ninja Turtle.

Michelangelo is one of my favorite artists of all time! Along with others I'll keep aside for mentioning on future Thursdays.

He's one of the most famous Italian Renaissance painters, sculptors, architects and poets. You could check him out and see a number of the masterpieces he did yourself.

The main interest here is THE art attack. One of the few things that took my breath away when I saw them. And I count myself extremely lucky to have had the chance to see this in real life at the Vatican.

The Sistine Chapel's ceiling.
