Egyptian film Basra english poster

Basra is a brand new film by Egyptian director Ahmed Rashwan. The film’s name means snap. “basra” is the word Egyptians use in card games when two players have the same card. It’s also used in every day life when two people think the same thing or say the same word etc.  read more »

Egyptian film posters

Collage - Thu, 2008-06-12 16:55 By collage

These amazing examples of vintage and colourful posters truly reflected the state of Egyptian cinema in the “good old days”. Not only did Egyptian cinema represent a thriving and creative industry, where talent and creativity naturally flourished, but it also showed an amazing attention to detail. Today’s films are bland at best and awful, uninspiring, lacking on the talent front and quite frankly criminal, if we’re being completely honest. The posters speak for themselves. This was an era when only talent and creativity made it. When vision was appreciated and implemented for all the world to see and cinema goers to enjoy.

Laura Marling

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Fri, 2007-11-23 00:23 By Sou

Doing what I do best, which is slacking around doing absolutely nothing and catching up on new releases, I happened to stumbled across Laura Marling, a 17 year old singer/songwriter from England. I read she was actually denied access to her own EP launch because she’s underage; she ended up performing outside the venue!  read more »

Damn Fish

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Tue, 2007-11-20 00:18 By Sou

Tons of fish in the water
So the waters I will test.
~ Thinking of You - Katy Perry

Funny thing our day and age. A burning question us females ask ourselves when we meet a man we’re interested in went along the lines of, “I wonder if he’s single.” Now it’s, “I wonder if he’s gay.”

I should save myself the heartache and ask the next fish that comes along if he swims on the other side of the ocean.

What the Hell!!!

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Mon, 2007-11-12 15:21 By Sou

This is unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m sick, AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve got the bloody flu, AGAIN!!! I’m stuck in my room with nothing to do, AGAIN!!!!!! Seriously, what the hell is wrong! My immune system hates me.

On a lighter note,my friend J introduced me to Yelle’s music, and he sent me a video of ‘A Cause Des Garçons - Remix’. I can’t stop listening to it! Plus, the video’s quite addictive; the dance is called Tecktonik and I love it! It looks so, so…weird, and I like weird ;) I’ve attempted to learn it, but let’s just say, being fuzzed up on medication, dancing like a loon and trying to stay balanced is one hell of a feat!  read more »

I Only Saw Him Once

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Sat, 2007-11-10 01:09 By Sou

And I’m already losing sleep over him.

What happened to me? What happened to the girl who said she’ll focus on her academics? What happened to “Miss I’ll Stay Single, Thank-you-very-much!”?? What happened?!! This is so frustrating! FRUSTRATING!!

Girls’ Night In

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Sat, 2007-11-03 21:31 By Sou

5:45pm: Rushing out the door, laptop in one hand, bag crammed with laptop charger/cell phone/iPod/iPod cable/wallet in the other.

5:50: Reach Susu’s house.

6:10: Dancing in Susu’s room to ‘Relax, Take it Easy’ by Mika.

6:30: In the Diwaniya trying to connect my laptop to the internet (Susu, your internet hates me).

6:35: Typing out remainder of my ‘Measure for Measure’ assignment

7:15-ish: Chika and Enigma arrive

7:30+: FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!!!

My camera decided that it wouldn’t charge, so I couldn’t take any photos, but Chika did a fantastic job, check out her post.

Ice Cream

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Tue, 2007-10-30 23:39 By Sou

I have the greatest friends in the world (you know who you are, I’d be lost without you), and they’ve helped me get back to tip top condition - well almost tip-top.

I received Jack Savoretti’s album last week, and it’s so pretty to look at :) My camera’s somewhere in my room, and I can’t be fussed to get up and look for it, but I promise I’ll take pictures of the inlay and the actual CD soon, well sometime this year at least.

I was watching TV last week and there was an interview with a band called New Young Pony Club, I fell in love with their music instantly! Ice Cream is one hell of a catchy track, so is FAN; their album ‘Fantastic Playroom’ is a must-listen. A MUST-LISTEN!

It’s Too Late

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Sat, 2007-10-27 08:25 By Sou

To think that I was supposed to be in Dubai this very second, this very moment. I hate how things have turned out, hate, hate, hate. All my planning, all my excitement…everything shattered.

I’m not being dramatic.

And to everyone who doesn’t understand, I don’t care. Turns out nobody understood how important this was to me - not even those closest to me.

I’ve stopped believing in, “Good things will come to those who wait, ” and “everything happens for a reason.” I’ve been disappointed one too many times to believe; I’ve lost all forms of hope.  read more »

Guitar as 2D Piano

Confessions of an Information Junkie - Reversing entropy, one bit at a time - Sat, 2007-07-14 12:33 By kratib

I've long regarded the guitar as a proto-2D piano, because whereas the piano keyboard is linear, one-dimensional, the guitar fretboard has cells arranged in 2D. However, on the guitar, one hand has to pluck the string whereas the other shapes the chords. On the piano, of course, it's enough to press the keys, so both hands are used to play notes.

So I was wondering what a true 2D piano would look like, one where both right and left hands would play notes. Turns out the answer has been with us since the late 70s, when Eddie Van Halen introduced tapping. But the full realization of it came yesterday when HC showed me some YouTube vids of contemporary (and young) musicians. Check out ZackKim and weep!  read more »

Louis Armstrong and the Sphinx

Confessions of an Information Junkie - Reversing entropy, one bit at a time - Wed, 2007-07-11 10:36 By kratib

I was watching episode 9 of the excellent documentary "Jazz", by Ken Burns yesterday when I bumped into this shot. I immediately grabbed it from the screen. Louis Armstrong was indeed a worldwide ambassador of jazz.

PS. You can buy me the print from the New York Times store ;-)
