Syria and Israel to make Peace?!?!?

Ha Ana Za! - Wed, 2008-05-21 14:51 By
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem just said that Israel has committed to a withdrawal from the Golan Heights all the way back to the 1967 border, during indirect talks brokered by Turkey, according to AFP.

Wow! Now that is BIG news...when talks were announced earlier I had automatically assumed that this would be just another notch on the bedpost of useless talks and negotiations. Apparently not so!
Truly a historical moment when Israel has finally agreed to realise Hafez Al-Assad's old dream of regaining the Golan and a tribute to Bashar's diplomatic bartering. But on what basis would such an agreement have been brokered?
My guess would probably be the obvious peace settlement with Israel -we may be soon be seeing Israeli tourists in Damascus-, recognition of Israel's right to exist and in all likelihood some kind of arrangement where all Palestinian activists be expelled from Syria, or heavily supressed. In anycase, this seems to be a nail in the coffin of the already gloomy looking Palestinian cause. The last standing supporter of the Palestinian cause has finally left the ring- Happy Nakbah Everyone!
On the bright side, I would imagine that many families are absolutely delighted by this turn in events and will be looking forward to being reunited with those friends and families whom they had been seperated from all those years ago.
